Gottschalk of Orbais

Gottschalk of Orbais
(c. 804–c. 869)
   Theologian and Poet.
Gottschalk was the son of a Saxon count. He was compelled to enter a Benedictine community and, although he seems to have been released from his vows by the 829 Synod of Mainz, this was opposed by his Abbot and he finally moved to Orbais. After studying the theology of St augustine of hippo, Gottschalk began to teach the doctrine of double predestination – that the elect are freely predestined to bliss and the damned to condemnation (on the foreknowledge of their guilt). He was opposed by rabanus and he was condemned at the 848 Synod of Mainz and at the 849 Synod of Quiercy as denying human free will and God’s universal saving rule. Although he was beaten and imprisoned, he was unrepentant and issued his Confessio Prolixior. He died unreconciled to the Church. His work was studied by the followers of Cornelius jansen in the seventeenth century. Gottschalk is also remembered as an important religious poet.
